Wife cake is also called sweetheart cake or 'lou po beng' in Cantonese or 'laopo bing' in other areas of China. It is filled with candied wintermelon, almond and white sesame paste all encased with a thin layer of flaky pastry that is glazed with an egg wash. There are variations on the legendary origin of the pastry. One says that the interesting name originates from a story within Guangdong province when a woman was highly praised in public for making such a delicious treat. Her husband proudly declared that they were his ‘wife’s cakes’. Price range: $5-$7. Popular places to buy the food: Bakeries such as 'Kee Wah Bakery'.
