Title

Pineapple Bun

Subject

Food, Hong Kong Food, Bun, Pineapple, Boh Loh Bau

Description

Hong Kongers call the pineapple bun 'boh loh bau'. Its name contains 'pineapple' not because it contains pineapple, but because of a special baking technique that makes the skin of the bun resemble the skin of a pineapple. The top of the bun is made from a crunchy cookie-type dough while the bottom half is made from a simple bread dough that is a little sweeter than Western bread. For one type of the bun, it is sliced in half and served hot with a slab of butter melting in its middle. Price range: $10-$15. Popular places to buy the food: Bakeries such as 'Cheung Chau Bakery', cha chaan tengs.
