St John's Hall

The predecessors of St John’s College are St John’s Hall and St Stephen’s Hall. In 1910, Sir Fredick Lugard, the Governor of Hong Kong made it compulsory for all university students to live in a hostel in order to ensure ‘discipline and moral education’. The Church Missionary Society (CMS) was invited to fund the building of a hostel. In 1912, first batch of students move in into St John’s Hall.
