Held on the first two days and the morning of the third day of the festival, the residents of Cheung Chau go vegetarian according to Buddhist practice. No dairy products, meat or fish are allowed. Households are expected to cook vegetarian food and local traditional restaurants temporarily change their menu to serve "jai" food consisting of shaped bean curd. Menu changes include veggieburgers, spring rolls, fish-shaped taro, mushroom stew, and sweet-n-sour tofu cubes. The food are served in Buddhist style. History
When the people paraded around the island with statues of Taoist deity during the late 18th century to drive away the evil spirits, they eschewed all meat for a few days as sacrifice to Pak Tai as well. When the pirates and plague disappeared, the Cheung Chau villagers continued this ritual for prolonged peace.
