‘Welcome to Sociology for Taught Postgraduates’ is a pre-sessional online course designed to prepare incoming students for their Masters degree programme at the HKU Department of Sociology. Through short lectures, key readings, and interactive activities, the course introduces core sociological concepts, theories, and ways of thinking. Taught by faculty from the department, it provides a strong foundation for your academic journey ahead.
The course is comprised of eight short modules for you to complete before starting your programme of study in the Fall semester.

This course is exclusively available to incoming taught postgraduate students in the Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong. Eligible students will receive enrolment instructions via their primary email address, which was provided during the admission process.
Yes. Starting with the 2026/27 cohort, all incoming taught postgraduate students in the following programmes are required to complete this course before beginning their studies:
Students whose prior degree is in Sociology may apply for a waiver of this requirement. Details on how to request a waiver will be provided along with the course enrolment instructions.
