Description

This soundtrack recorded the sound of unloading process in the Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market around 11 pm. Every night, trucks arrive the Fruit Market and park along the Waterloo Road. Workers lower the tailgate of the truck and start to unload boxes of fruit. Then, they use manual pallet jack to transfer fruit boxes to different stalls and pile them up at the roadside in front of those stalls. Later on, these fruit would be distributed to retailers from all over Hong Kong.

The unique operation time of the fruit market is one of the remarkable features that makes the place special. Nevertheless, the noises produced by these kind of activities disturb the nearby residents every night for decades of time. According to the Noise Control Ordinance, any person who between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., or at any time on a general holiday in any domestic premises or public place makes or causes to be made any noise which is a source of annoyance to any person commits an offence and shall be liable to a fine of $10,000. In this case, legislation cannot help solving this complicated issue that last for more than 30 years.

What can we do to safeguard such an unique urban landscape, and at the same time improve the living environment of the nearby residents?
