Welcome to the exhibition of Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market!

Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market was founded in 1913. It was originally named as Government Vegetables Market which sold fruit and vegetables while fish traders joined in the 1930s. In 1965, vegetables and fish stalls moved out and relocated at Cheung Sha Wan. From then on the market has become a specialist fruit wholesaling market.

Conservation of Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market is a controversial issue between government and society. This market had already existed for 105 years in Yau Ma Tei District, this historical significant enhance the architecture, cultural and social value of this place. Although Heritage Office had classified fruit market as the Grade II Historical Building in 2009, government still does not have any conservation planning for the fruit market. In addition of the relocation policy of fruit market is delayed for many years, the future of fruit market still becomes a mystery.

We hope that this digital gallery can illustrate the value of the place and its current dilemma to the public. With more understanding on the viewpoints of different stakeholders, the society can build more solid opinions on the discussion of the market’s future. So do not hesitate to leave your comments and share your digital resources about the Fruit Market to all of us!
