In a regular IVF cycle, the ovaries are stimulated to release as many eggs as possible for subsequent fertilization with sperm. Fertilised eggs (embryos) are then nurtured and implanted in a woman’s uterus. Differing from person to person, this procedure may result in several viable embryos. After transferring one or two embryos to the woman’s uterus for implantation, unused embryos will normally be frozen and preserved for later use. However, some couples may choose to donate the remaining embryos to other couples who are also unable to conceive using their own eggs.

How do I locate an egg donor?

  • Egg donor can be someone you know (a family or friend). Some people prefer a sibling or relative as egg donor so that the child born as a result will share some of the genetic material of the parent.
  • There is currently no organization in Hong Kong that provides matching service for potential donor and recipients
  • You may wish to explore overseas donor egg banks for information on potential donors

Things to think about:

  • What will the relationship between your child and the egg donor look like?
