Abnormal sperm and semen

For women to get pregnant, men have to ejaculate enough sperm into the female reproductive tract for eggs to be fertilized. In some men, a complete lack of sperm or reduced numbers of sperm may hamper the chances of successful conception.

  • Azoospermia refers to a complete absence of sperm in a man’s semen. Azoospermia may result if, for some reason, the body is not producing sperm at all, or if the ejaculatory ducts are blocked or obstructed, preventing sperm from reaching the semen to be ejaculated.
  • Oligospermia refers to when there is very low level of sperm in a man’s semen, which may similarly be caused by blockage or obstruction of the ejaculatory ducts.
