Chinese Herbal Tea (涼茶) has been an affordable alternative to doctors since the late 19th century. Especially popular in subtropical climate zones Guangdong, Hong Kong & Macau, they are consumed to relieve heat and humidity within the body. Leung cha was officially selected as one of Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage in 2006. Our digital gallery recognizes the art of Chinese herbal tea - hence both herbal tea materials and herbal tea shops are the two quintessential elements of this intangible cultural heritage.

The making of herbal tea constitutes several raw materials. Herbal tea shops have long been a part of the local culture as community spaces and places of amusement in the old Hong Kong.

We curated these items for our users to navigate and educate themselves on Chinese herbal tea. You may find the guides below helpful.

We would also like to express our immense gratitude towards our coordinators Dr.Xiao Hu and Mr.Jeremy Ng from The University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Education for their extensive dedication towards providing us with significant guidance in the making of this digital gallery.
