Fan painting means drawing on fans. The Chinese character of "fan" (扇) is derived from feathers under a roof etymologically. Originally, fans were used for cooling but many great painters devoted their talents to the decoration of fans. These fans could be used in a ceremony and as a sartorial accessory.
