An Indian religion, Buddhism encompasses a variety of traditions, beliefs and spiritual practices largely based on original teachings attributed to the Buddha and resulting interpreted philosophies. Two major extant branches of Buddhism are generally recognized by scholars: Theravada and Mahayana.
